THURSDAY - SEPTEMBER 23 |
Miami
FL 30
Pittsburgh
22
This
is the
first
time
the
Panthers
and
Hurricanes
have
met
since
Miami
competed
in the
Big
East.
The
Canes
have
won
the
last
six
meetings
and
14 of
the
last
15.
Both
teams
have
their
backs
against
the
wall
and
need
a win
to avoid
dropping
under
.500.
Miami
quarterback
Jacory
Harris
took
over
where
he left
off
last
season
by throwing
four
interceptions
in his
last
game
against
Ohio
State.
Miami
won't
win
these
types
of games
when
the
turnover
bug
bites
their
signal
caller.
They
have
to continue
throwing
however
as the
Hurricanes
feature
several
game
breakers
at receiver
with
the
leader
being
senior
Leonard
Hankerson.
Running
back
Damien
Berry
continues
to keep
the
balance
on offense
at an
even
keel.
Pressure
has
caused
major
problems
for
Harris
and
the
Canes.
However,
Pitt's
defense
has
been
void
of a
pass
rush
thus
far
without
the
team's
top
pass
rusher,
senior
DE Greg
Romeus,
due
to a
herniated
disc.
Starting
middle
linebacker
Dan
Mason
has
been
demoted
to second
team
as a
disciplinary
measure
and
the
safety
spot
is riddled
with
injuries.
Pitt
has
to get
their
running
game
on track
with
Dion
Lewis
who
is off
to a
terrible
start
with
just
102
yards
through
two
games.
The
offensive
line
with
three
new
starters
has
not
been
helping
out
in this
department
and
that
has
put
unneeded
pressure
on young
quarterback
Tito
Sunseri.
Miami
is strong
up front
on defense
and
linebackers
Colin
McCarthy
and
Sean
Spence
have
stood
out
as the
top
tacklers.
More
than
330
former
Pitt
players
and
coaches
are
expected
to be
in attendance
for
this
game
at Heinz
Field.
Pitt
must
overcome
a great
deal
of adversity
that
includes
surgery
to its
top
defender,
the
suspensions
of three
players,
discipline
for
its
middle
linebacker
and
a number
of injuries.
This
is a
bad
formula
against
a good
football
team.
And
Miami
is a
good
football
team. |

The
surprise
of the
ACC
thus
far
through
September
may
be the
3-0
Wolfpack.
Russell
Wilson,
the
First
Team
All-ACC
quarterback
of two
years
ago,
looks
like
he may
have
finally
shaken
off
the
rust
that
resulted
from
missing
both
spring
and
summer
football
while
playing
college
baseball
and
then
Major
League
Baseball
in the
Colorado
Rockies
farm
system.
Wilson
looked
like
his
old
self
last
Thursday
against
Cincinnati
while
throwing
for
333
yards.
Reciever
Jarvis
Williams
has
become
one
of this
favorite
targets.
The
running
game
however
is still
a major
work
in progress
as the
Pack
has
yet
to find
their
main
ball
carriers
after
flirting
with
converted
defensive
back
Dean
Haynes
at the
position.
The
defense
has
performed
fairly
decent
(currently
the
nation's
20th
ranked
run
defense)
but
this
is a
different
task
in Atlanta
slowing
down
the
triple-option.
Tech
rolled
up 448
total
yards
of offense
last
week
against
a short-handed
Tar
Heel
defense.
Senior
quarterback
Joshua
Nesbitt
continues
his
frantic
touchdown
pace
and
found
a little
more
success
in the
passing
attack
last
week.
The
Yellow
Jackets
have
allowed
a 100-yard
rusher
in every
game
so far.
But
that
should
not
be a
problem
this
week
against
an NC
State
team
that
lacks
a ground
game.
This
one
should
be very
close
as most
Georgia
Tech
games
seem
to be
following
this
course.
Can
the
Wolfpack
defense
contain
this
option
attack?
That
is always
the
key
question.
This
is the
first
time
these
two
have
met
since
Paul
Johnson
became
the
GT coach.
So the
answer
is probably
no. |

The
Hokies
are
still
getting
pushed
around
on defense.
Injuries,
suspensions
and
lackluster
play
gave
four
players
their
first
career
starts
last
week
versus
East
Carolina.
They
are
missing
way
too
many
tackles
and
assignments.
The
front
four
has
been
bullied
by their
blocking
counterparts,
which
has
to be
a concern
going
into
the
Boston
College
game.
Quarterback
Tyrod
Taylor
was
much
more
efficient
last
week
averaging
nearly
25 yards
per
completion
after
some
costly
turnovers
that
cost
the
Hokies
a devastating
loss
to FCS
opponent
James
Madison.
Heisman
hopeful
running
back
Ryan
William
is highly
questionable
after
suffering
a hamstring
injury
last
Saturday,
which
ultimately
means
more
carries
for
the
other
running
back
punch
of Darren
Evans
and
David
Wilson.
It's
no secret
the
Boston
College
offense
revolves
around
its
massive
offensive
line,
which
has
become
tradition
at the
Heights.
Their
performance
against
weak
competition
through
the
first
two
games
has
been
sup
par
however.
With
a week
off
to prepare,
expect
this
group
with
running
back
Montel
Harris
(has
48 carries
through
two
games)
to test
this
Hokie
defense
early
and
often…especially
with
quarterback
Dave
Shinskie
continuing
to show
no sign
of consistency.
The
defense,
even
with
linebacker
Mark
Herzlich
back
alongside
heralded
Luke
Kuechly
on the
inside,
has
not
been
performing
well.
These
two
former
Big
East
rivals
played
for
the
ACC
title
in 2007
and
'08
and
some
think
they
might
do that
again.
It will
be the
first
real
test
for
the
Eagles
whereas
VT has
already
been
through
a few
battles.
The
Hokie
offense
should
have
a big
day.
Ground
control
by BC
is their
only
chance.
They
just
don't
have
the
passing
attack
to threaten
anyone. |

33 UCLA
14
The
reason
UCLA
went
to its
version
of the
Pistol
offense
was
to get
better
rushing
results.
They
have
accomplished
this
task
and
are
averaging
204
yards
per
game
on the
ground,
almost
doubling
last
year's
mark.
Running
back
Johnathan
Franklin
rushed
for
a career
high
158
yards
against
Houston.
A big
problem
faces
the
Bruins
this
week.
Texas
leads
the
nation
in rushing
defense
after
just
holding
Texas
Tech
to -14
yards
rushing.
That
means
quarterback
Kevin
Prince,
who
made
some
strides
against
Houston,
absolutely
has
to complete
a higher
percentage
of his
passes.
That
task
won't
be easy
either.
The
entire
Texas
defense
has
been
dominating
including
the
secondary.
Offensively,
quarterback
Garrett
Gilbert
had
his
best
career
game
last
Saturday
throwing
for
227
yards
while
torching
Texas
Tech
in the
first
half.
Receiver
James
Kirkendoll
is starting
to emerge
as the
threat
this
offense
needs.
The
running
game
is still
by committee
with
Whittaker,
Newton,
Robertson
or Goodwin.
Coach
Mack
Brown's
determination
to get
the
ground
game
finally
moving
was
evident,
as he
has
been
using
a conventional
set
with
two
running
backs.
The
victory
over
Houston
was
UCLA's
first
over
a ranked
team
in more
than
two
seasons.
It was
at home
against
a team
from
the
Lone
Star
State.
This
one
is now
in the
backyard
of perennial
Top
Ten
foe
Texas.
Unless
the
Bruin's
two
biggest
defensive
stars,
linebacker
Akeem
Ayers
or free
safety
Rahim
Moore
make
a difference,
this
one
could
get
ugly.
At least
the
Longhorns
don't
appear
to be
a team
that
lights
up the
scoreboard. |

Alabama
34 Arkansas
22
The
consensus
is that
Alabama
does
not
have
any
weaknesses…running
back
being
the
least
of them.
Former
Heisman
winner
Mark
Ingram
picked
up where
he left
off
last
week
at Duke
running
for
151
yard
on just
nine
carries.
The
minor
knee
surgery
that
kept
him
out
the
first
two
games
did
not
seem
to slow
down
his
ability.
This
is an
incredibly
balanced
offense
and
it plays
with
a mistake-free
efficiency
that
is glorious
to watch
and
brutal
to defend.
Senior
quarterback
Greg
McElroy
did
toss
his
first
interception
last
week
but
that
is digging
for
straws.
If anyone
was
thought
to test
Bama
for
the
SEC
West
crown
this
preseason,
Arkansas
was
the
team.
For
the
Razorbacks
to win
they
obviously
need
another
huge
day
from
quarterback
Ryan
Mallett,
who
continues
adding
to his
own
Heisman
resume.
His
380
passing
yards
against
Georgia
last
week,
which
included
a 40-yard
game
winner
to Greg
Childs
with
14 seconds
left
gave
Arkansas
the
quality
win
they
needed
before
this
grand
match
up in
Fayetteville.
Childs
has
already
developed
into
probably
the
SEC's
top
receiving
target.
The
running
game
however
is ranked
dead
last
in the
conference.
This
means
Alabama’s
best
defensive
player,
end
Marcell
Dareus,
who
finally
played
last
week
after
a two
game
suspension,
will
be pinning
his
ears
back.
That
is not
a good
formula
and
the
Crimson
Tide
secondary
continues
to put
up outstanding
performances.
Expect
a ton
of passing
from
the
home
team.
This
one-dimensional
approach
won't
work
against
this
multi-dimensional
Alabama
team.
The
home
crowd,
expectations
and
the
target
on Bama
at least
keeps
the
game
respectable. |

Stanford
42 Notre
Dame
31
If Stanford
beats
Notre
Dame
on Sept.
25,
they
would
be 4-0
for
the
first
time
since
1986.
Cardinal
head
coach
Jim
Harbaugh
is on
the
verge
of doing
something
real
special.
His
squad’s
68 points
last
week
were
the
most
ever
allowed
by a
Wake
Forest
team
coached
by Jim
Grobe.
Sophomore
quarterback
sensation
Andrew
Luck
had
his
best
all-around
game
and
has
ten
touchdown
passes
on the
year
with
zero
interceptions.
His
scrambling
ability
and
deceptive
speed
has
also
been
a luxury
for
this
offense.
The
offensive
line
is blowing
open
huge
holes
and
has
yet
to give
up a
sack.
The
ground
game
has
benefited
immensely
much
like
Toby
Gerhart
had
the
benefit
of running
behind
last
year.
The
Irish
counter
with
the
same
formula
they
have
utilized
for
a decade
now.
The
offense
throws
and
throws
some
more.
Quarterback
Dayne
Crist
set
career
highs
last
week
in completions
(32),
attempts
(55),
passing
yards
(369)
and
touchdown
passes
(four).
Great,
but
the
running
game
with
talented
tailback
Armando
Allen
gets
lost
in the
shuffle
at times.
On the
other
side,
this
Irish
defense
ranks
99th
nationally
at stuffing
the
run
and
90th
at defending
the
pass,
ugh!
Notre
Dame
will
continue
to get
their
points
this
week
off
Stanford
but
it won't
be nearly
enough
to match
what
the
Cardinal
is doing.
The
media
wants
to keep
saying
the
Irish
are
(will
be)
back,
but
this
team
looks
to be
exactly
the
same
as before.
Which
also
equates
to a
1-3
record
with
the
meat
of the
schedule
still
on deck.
Stanford
meanwhile,
looks
far
better
than
most
could
have
imagined.
They
might
hang
40 in
South
Bend. |

The
competition
has
not
been
much
to brag
about,
but
the
Wildcats
are
still
putting
up some
impressive
numbers
and
an impressive
record
to match
considering
most
of the
preseason
prognosticators
wrote
this
team
off
during
the
summer.
Kentucky
has
topped
200
rushing
and
200
passing
yards
in each
of its
three
games.
The
last
time
the
Wildcats
posted
three
consecutive
200-yard
rushing
performances
was
back
in 1990.
Receiver
Randall
Cobb
continues
to climb
the
school’s
record
list
for
career
touchdowns.
Derrick
Locke
is becoming
a consistent
game
breaking
running
back
(over
100
yards
rushing
in first
three
games).
Most
surprising
has
been
the
strong
early-season
play
of quarterback
Mike
Hartline.
The
pass
rush
has
been
good
and
UK is
holding
opponents
to just
a 41%
completion
rate.
But
that
was
against
nobody
remotely
resembling
the
likes
of a
Florida
team
in the
Swamp.
The
Gators
are
winning
with
defense.
The
Vols
managed
just
29 rushing
yards
last
week
on 23
carries.
The
pass
rush
recorded
six
sacks
and
10 interceptions
have
been
recorded
on the
year
already.
If Florida
is winning
ugly,
they
will
take
it.
While
fumbles
on snaps
have
been
a problem,
quarterback
John
Brantley
has
now
thrown
140
consecutive
passes
without
and
interception.
Jeff
Demps
is a
one-play
away
touchdown
back.
Kentucky
cannot
beat
Florida
even
if the
turnover
margin
is significant.
The
talent,
speed
and
depth
differential
will
be evident
on the
scoreboard
as the
Gainesville
crowd
is waiting
to explode
in a
game
against
an undefeated
conference
opponent. |

Auburn
24 South

20
Play
defense
and
run
with
the
football.
These
are
not
exactly
the
type
of traits
South
Carolina
head
coach
Steve
Spurrier
has
become
famous
for.
But
that
is what
he now
has
in Columbia
and
he is
now
winning
with
that
formula.
It's
been
good
enough
so far
to rank
his
Gamecocks
12th
in the
AP Poll.
They
get
a chance
to prove
it on
the
road
versus
the
best
competition
they
have
seen
so far.
Freshman
RB Marcus
Lattimore
has
given
the
Gamecocks
something
they
have
not
had
during
Steve
Spurrier's
tenure
at the
school
-- a
consistent,
powerful
rushing
attack
(ranked
last
in the
SEC
the
past
two
seasons).
That
has
allowed
the
coverage
on wide
receivers
Alshon
Jeffery
and
Tori
Gurley
to loosen.
But
the
passing
game
is now
missing
despite
the
talent
at receiver
and
the
leadership
of veteran
Stephen
Garcia
at quarterback.
Their
top
offensive
lineman
responsible
for
the
ground
game
turnaround
has
been
guard
Rokevious
Watkins
and
he is
questionable
this
week
with
a shoulder
injury.
Auburn's
defense
has
been
playing
fairly
well
given
the
problems
of just
a season
ago.
Lattimore
is the
first
big
every
down
back
they
will
have
seen.
It's
hard
to imagine
a ton
of points
being
scored
by South
Carolina
against
anyone…that
is not
their
style.
Auburn
can
counter
at home
with
a much
better
chance
of scoring
points.
Getting
the
ground
game
going
has
proved
cumbersome
however.
The
Tigers
have
their
own
true

a better

the

The
numbers
just
keep
building
for
this
one.
The
Broncos
have
won
16 straight
games
and
currently
own
the
nation's
longest
home
winning
streak.
The
Broncos
are
also
just
one
of three
teams
that
have
not
played
a home
game
yet.
The
fans
will
be rowdy
and
ESPN
GameDay
will
be there
for
the
first
time.
This
is a
team
that
excels
at most
every
single
unit.
It became
clear
in the
opener
with
Virginia
Tech
this
was
an exceptional
defensive
line.
The
offensive
line
may
be even
more
impressive.
They
completely
dominated
Wyoming
in the
trenches
last
week,
out
rushing
them
275
to -21.
That
does
not
even
take
into
account
the
Heisman
type
numbers
being
put
up by
quarterback
Kellen
Moore.
The
Beavers
have
to win
the
special
teams
seeing
that
James
Rodgers
is proving
to be
the
most
dynamic
return
man
in the
county.
He also
takes
reverse
handoffs
from
his
brother
Jaquizz
Rodgers
in OSU's
version
of the
"Wild
Beaver"
where
Jaquizz
takes
the
direct
snap.
Quarterback
Ryan
Katz
and
the
passing
game
have
not
proven
to be
much
of a
threat
while
currently
ranking
dead
last
in the
Pac
Ten.
What
hurts
Oregon
State
the
most
is that
they
have
recorded
only
two
quarterback
sacks.
Other
top
rate
quarterbacks
such
as TCU's
Andy
Dalton
made
the
Beavers
pay
for
their
lack
of pressure
so Moore
should
be licking
his
chops
in anticipation.
Whenever
Boise
State
gets
a game
like
this
on the
Smurf
Turf,
it usually
spells
a quick
lead
and
eventual
blow
out.
They
are
playing
with
a National
Championship
chip
on their
shoulders
too.
The
Beavers
only
chance
is if
the
Rodgers
brothers
both
have
the
games
of their
life
and
that
may
still
not
be enough.
Boise
State
gets
busy
on the
Beavers
and
style
points
count
in this
one
since
it is
the
last
ranked
team
the
home
team
will
likely
face
all
year. |

For
the
third
straight
game,
Mountaineer
running
back
Noel
Devin
went
past
the
century
mark
carrying
the
rock.
Receivers
Jock
Sanders
and
Tavon
Austin
are
incredibly
talented
in the
slot
that
plays
a huge
role
in this
spread
option
package.
Sophomore
quarterback
Geno
Smith
is getting
better
and
more
comfortable
throwing
the
football,
which
finally
gives
WVU
some
legitimate
offensive
balance.
They
also
have
found
a power
game
that
can
control
the
clock
with
fullback
Ryan
Clarke
pounding
between
the
tackles.
The
offensive
line
on the
other
hand
has
not
been
performing
well.
Nor
has
the
secondary
when
it comes
to giving
up the
big
play.
These
two
factors
have
to be
addressed
before
Saturday
night
gets
here.
LSU
is going
to win
this
game
with
defense
and
special
teams.
The
corners
led
by All-SEC
performer
Patrick
Peterson
are
playing
well
and
the
tackling
has
been
crisp
across
the
front,
which
is key
for
the
type
of scat
players
WVU
will
suit
up.
This
game
will
stay
closer
then
people
think
because
the
LSU
offense
is producing
very
little.
Quarterback
Jordan
Jefferson
threw
for
97 yards
last
week
and
only
threw
one
pass
that
covered
more
than
20 yards.
He won't
light
up this
group
either.
What
some
have
failed
to realize
is just
how
much
potential
this
WVU
defense
maintains
at every
unit.
This
game
is going
to be
tight
and
don't
be surprised
if WVU
has
a chance
to win.
A few
turnovers
here
and
there
and
WVU
could
escape
with
a huge
"W".
Baton
Rouge
night
games
however
are
something
none
of these
Morgantown
players
have
ever
seen.
This
makes
the
edge
fall
to the
Tigers
in a
close
one
with
a great
deal
of defense. |

Cal
fell
out
of the
Top
25 this
week,
which
is probably
a good
thing.
They
have
lost
11 of
the
past
14 games
when
ranked
in one
of the
two
major
polls.
The
Golden
Bears
have
built
their
offense
around
sensational
running
back
Shane
Vereen,
who
rushed
for
a career-high
198
yards
last
week
on just
19 carries.
Vereen's
runs
were
of the
spectacular
variety,
involving
impressive
cutbacks
and
shedding
a lot
of tackles.
Kevin
Riley's
control
behind
center
has
made
this
a formidable
aerial
attack
and
receiver
Marvin
Jones
has
emerged
as one
of the
best
pass
catchers
to come
out
of Berkeley
in quite
some
time.
Vereen
will
make
for
a great
match
up to
watch
as the
Arizona
defensive
line
has
been
superb.
They
totally
stuffed
what
was
supposed
to be
a powerful
Iowa
ground
game
last
week
while
sacking
and
harassing
quarterback
Ricky
Stanzi
all
evening.
What
has
put
Arizona
into
their
current
high
ranking
has
been
their
own
man
behind
center
in Nick
Foles.
He completed
5 of
6 passes
for
76 yards
on the
game-winning
drive
against
Iowa
and
also
torched
them
for
300
total
yards,
something
that
very
few
teams
have
accomplished.
Sixth
year
senior
offensive
tackle
Adam
Grant
is playing
on the
left
side
for
the
first
time
this
season,
and
he basically
neutralized
Iowa
All-American
defensive
end
Adrian
Clayborn,
who
had
a mere
three
tackles.
The
Pac
Ten
has
potential
to be
crazy
this
year
like
many
others.
It would
not
be shocking
to see
Cal
regroup
and
pull
this
one
out.
The
logical
bet
is that
Arizona
continues
to perform
at its
best
in the
confines
of Tucson.
But
the
Wildcats
won't
blow
too
many
teams
out. |

The
Ducks
appear
to be
the
most
explosive
offensive
team
in the
country.
Through
non-conference
play,
Oregon
is first
nationally
in total
offense
and
scoring.
On the
other
side
of the
ball,
the
Ducks
are
first
in total
defense,
scoring
defense
and
pass
efficiency
defense.
Portland
State
got
blasted
by both
of these
teams.
According
to their
head
coach
Nigel
Burton,
"They're
both
big
and
they're
both
fast.
I think
it will
be a
good
game."
Oregon
has
two
shutouts
already;
the
first
time
the
Ducks
have
blanked
multiple
opponents
in the
same
season
since
1964.
Much
of the
Duck
credit
goes
to these
unbelievable
ball
carriers
that
combined
to rush
for
a school
record
528
yards
last
week.
The
offensive
line
gets
the
praise
from
Heisman
Hopeful
running
back
LaMichael
James
though
who
claims
he never
got
touched
once
in the
effort.
Arizona
State
had
better
be ready.
Last
week
Wisconsin's
John
Clay
had
a steady
day
rushing
for
123
yards.
A big
advantage
falls
to Oregon
when
they
run
with
the
ball
and
that
could
spell
problems
in Tempe,
or anywhere
for
that
matter.
Sun
Devil
quarterback
Steven
Threet
is showing
ever-improving
command
of the
offense.
He will
need
to come
up huge
for
State
to pull
this
one
off.
True
freshman
running
back
Diantre
Lewis
has
added
some
zip
to the
ground
game
but
more
will
be needed.
The
Sun
Devils
do not
match
up so
well
when
facing
the
Oregon
strengths.
The
Ducks
keep
on Quacking
while
rising
in the
eyes
of the
pollsters. |
