The
difference
with
FSU
in 2010
is a
defense
that
went
from
being
ranked
107th
nationally
a year
ago
to a
No.
20 ranking
now.
They
also
lead
the
nation
in sacking
the
quarterback,
which
will
play
a major
factor
when
lining
up against
significant
Wolf
Pack
signal
caller
Russell
Wilson.
The
defensive
line
has
returned
to the
days
of old
with
speed
and
taking
away
the
edge.
But
they
are
still
ranked
9th
in the
ACC
at defending
the
pass.
That
formula
makes
for
a high
scoring
shoot
out
that
ultimately
means
Seminole
quarterback
Christian
Ponder
needs
to wake
up and
play
much
sharper.
He has
tossed
seven
interceptions
already
and
is only
completing
60 percent
of his
passes.
The
offensive
line
continues
to be
a big
advantage
for
FSU
this
week
as they
look
to the
run
to slow
down
the
game.
NC State
and
Wilson
lead
the
league
in passing,
scoring
and
total
offense,
but
he too
has
tossed
eight
interceptions
in just
the
last
three
games.
What
has
hurt
the
Wolf
Pack
has
been
the
lack
of an
explosive
running
game
and
a defense
that
looks
to be
wearing
down
as October
comes
to a
close.
This
will
be the
third
consecutive
time
Florida
State
has
traveled
to Raleigh
for
a Thursday
night
ESPN
game.
They
have
won
all
three
against
head
coach
Tom
O'Brien.
This
one
is a
little
different
though
in that
it's
a battle
for
first
place
in the
Atlantic
Division.
With
this
being
a nationally
televised
game,
it's
going
to bring
more
scrutiny
on how
much
progress
Florida
State's
program
has
made
this
season.
The
Noles
responded
in the
same
environment
at Miami.
They
likely
do it
again,
but
this
one
is much
closer
due
to the
NC State
passing
attack.

It's
a scenario
the
2-5
Volunteers
have
gotten
used
to this
year.
For
a half,
their
young,
depth-shy
team
battles
and
scraps
with
the
best
the
SEC
and
the
nation
have
to offer.
Then
it wears
down
and
gets
beaten
soundly
in the
second
half.
How
young
is this
team?
Five
true
freshmen
and
17 players
overall
have
drawn
their
first
collegiate
starts
this
season...ten
of them
on offense.
The
Vols
have
actually
outscored
their
opposition
in the
first
quarter
but
the
lack
of depth
has
crushed
the
Vols
after
that
when
fatigue
sets
in.
Running
back
Tauren
Poole
continues
to be
the
bright
spot
for
the
offense.
The
receivers
have
performed
well
considering
the
dual
quarterback
combo
of Matt
Simms
and
Tyler
Bray
has
been
far
from
accurate.
The
match
up problem
continues
this
week,
as the
Gamecock
defense
doesn't
give
up too
many
yards
on the
ground.
This
is the
SEC's
No.
2 ranked
rushing
defense.
Offensively,
South
Carolina
has
one
of the
top
receiving
tandems
in the
country
with
Tori
Gurley
and
Alshon
Jeffery.
Big
plays
continue
to haunt
the
UT defense
as it
allowed
536
yards
to the
Crimson
Tide
last
week.
South
Carolina
plays
a similar
game.
The
decision
on whether
running
back
Marcus
Lattimore
will
play
this
week
for
Carolina
after
spraining
an ankle
a week
prior
will
be a
game
time
decision.
It likely
won't
matter.
South
Carolina
is 4-0
at home
this
season
and
has
won
12 of
its
last
13 games
in Williams-Brice
Stadium.

Spartan
quarterback
Kirk
Cousins
has
exceeded
most
expectations
and
now
finds
himself
guiding
an undefeated
team
while
getting
a few
outside
looks
at Heisman
status.
State
has
also
found
success
through
balance
as they
continue
to utilize
all
three
running
backs,
although
Edwin
Baker
has
emerged
as the
go-to
guy.
That
ground
attack
has
stalled
the
past
three
games
and
this
offensive
line
faces
its
biggest
challenge
with
an Iowa
defensive
line
that
has
four
players
worthy
of NFL
Draft
status.
This
Hawkeye
front
is widely
considered
the
best
unit
in America.
Iowa's
sturdy
defense
has
sprung
some
leaks
the
last
two
weeks
however
against
Michigan
(522
yards)
and
Wisconsin
(31
points).
Look
for
Cousins
to put
the
ball
in the
air
early
and
often.
Two
key
linebackers
for
Iowa,
Jeff
Tarpinian
and
Jeremiha
Hunter,
are
questionable
for
this
game
which
could
play
a major
factor.
Iowa
has
quite
a signal
caller
too.
Senior
Ricky
Stanzi
ranks
second
in the
nation
in passing
efficiency
and
is completing
68 percent
of his
passes.
There
is plenty
of balance
on this
side
too
with
running
back
Adam
Robinson
topping
100
yards
five
times
this
year
while
Derrell
Johnson-Koulianos
continues
to rewrite
the
Iowa
receiving
record
book.
Michigan
State
linebacker
Greg
Jones
continues
to perform
as a
front-runner
for
the
Butkus
Award
and
his
defensive
line
gets
better
each
week.
These
teams
have
played
three
straight
thrilling
games,
including
last
season
when
the
Hawkeyes
won
with
a touchdown
pass
as time
expired.
Look
for
much
the
same
this
Saturday.
Stanzi
makes
the
difference
again
against
a vulnerable
Spartan
secondary.
Iowa
desperately
needs
this
one
at home.

30 Missouri
24
During
the
first
half
of the
season,
Missouri
was
looking
like
a program
on the
rise.
After
beating
the
BCS
No.
1 ranked
team
Oklahoma
last
week
the
Tigers
made
a new
statement.
They
are
the
team
to beat
in the
Big
12.
Missouri
is getting
it done
by hitting
on all
cylinders.
Quarterback
Blaine
Gabbert
continued
his
hot
streak
dating
back
to the
Texas
A&M
game.
He completed
30 of
42 passes
for
308
yards,
with
one
touchdown
and
no interceptions
versus
the
Sooners.
Running
back
De'Vion
Moore
has
done
a remarkable
job
after
top
rusher
Derrick
Washington
was
dismissed
to start
the
year.
What
has
set
this
team
apart
has
been
a surprising
domination
on the
front
line
on both
sides
of the
ball.
That
will
be crucial
this
week
against
the
physical
Huskers.
This
punishing
Blackshirt
defense
for
Nebraska
is coming
off
its
worst
performance
after
giving
up 495
to Oklahoma
State
last
week.
They
won't
be facing
the
same
offensive
juggernaut
so expect
this
Pelini
defense
to respond
at home
in a
game
that
will
likely
determine
the
Big
12 North
Champion.
Quarterback
Taylor
Martinez
bounced
back
last
week
and
is showing
that
Nebraska
can
throw
the
ball
too.
Seven
players
caught
passes
and
Martinez
is the
first
Nebraska
player
to ever
pass
for
300
yards
and
run
for
100
yards
in the
same
game.
Missouri
now
has
the
pressure
of being
the
hunted.
Gabbert
faces
the
best
secondary
he will
see
all
year.
Lincoln
should
be primed
for
the
upset,
but
is this
really
an upset?
If the
game
comes
down
to field
goals,
Nebraska
has
a kicker
in Alex
Henery
who
has
made
17 straight.

Georgia

It's
been
a rocky
first
season
for
junior
quarterback
John
Brantley
who
has
thrown
just
six
touchdowns
in seven
games
as a
starter
and
just
one
in SEC
play.
Poor
pass
protection
hasn't
helped.
He has
been
sacked
six
times
over
his
last
two
games.
The
Gators
have
also
turned
the
ball
over
14 times.
Does
this
offense
wish
to remain
a spread-option
with
"B"
quarterback
Trey
Burton
or pass
more
with
Brantley?
Failing
to find
an identity
has
hurt
especially
against
more
physical
teams.
Georgia
is starting
to get
better
play
from
their
defense,
but
they
still
need
work
defending
the
pass.
Look
for
defensive
end
Justin
Houston
to play
a role
if Florida
decides
to go
the
aerial
route.
The
Bulldogs
are
on a
roll
right
now
having
won
three
straight
and
scoring
more
than
40 or
more
points
during
said
stretch.
The
offensive
line
is starting
to perform
like
the
lofty
preseason
expectations
had
them
pegged
for.
Running
back
Washaun
Ealy
set
a school
record
with
five
touchdowns
last
week.
Most
important
is that
All-American
receiver
A.J.
Green
continues
to elevate
his
team
after
serving
a four-game
suspension.
Florida's
pass
defense
has
been
its
strong
suite,
but
teams
have
been
able
run
through
UF's
mediocre
defensive
front
seven.
This
front
line
advantage
is what
usually
decides
the
winner
of this
Jacksonville
scuffle.
Florida
had
the
week
off
after
suffering
three
straight
losses.
They
aren't
as physical
and
lack
an offensive
identity
while
Georgia
is hot
right
now.

UCF
17 East
Carolina
14
This
is a
very
important
game
for
the
C-USA
East
as these
are
the
only
two
undefeated
teams
left
in league
play.
Both
enter
the
weekend
on a
roll
and
both
boast
a nine-game
conference-winning
streak.
These
two
have
combined
to win
the
East
Division
four
of the
last
five
years.
UCF
is the
best
defense
in the
conference
and
7th
best
nationally
on paper.
They
do everything
well...stuffing
the
run,
the
pass
and
producing
sacks.
Pirate
quarterback
Dominique
Davis
has
his
hands
full.
He has
to be
careful
not
to let
the
interception
bug
that
has
forced
him
to toss
10 interceptions
already
show
up in
Orlando.
East
Carolina
is still
the
top
passing
team
in C-USA
as receiver
Dwayne
Harris
continues
to climb
the
conference
record
books.
One
team
will
throw
(ECU)
and
the
other
will
run
(UCF).
The
Knights
have
a dual-threat
quarterback
in Jeff
Godfrey
but
they
are
not
much
of a
threat
to throw
the
ball.
They
will
run
it and
chew
up the
clock
with
running
back
Ronnie
Weaver
and
that
is good
news
since
the
Pirates
have
trouble
stopping
the
run.
The
ECU
defense
has
not
performed
well
in the
stat
department.
Keeping
the
Knights
out
of the
end
zone
will
be critical,
because
the
Pirates
can't
count
on their
offense
bailing
them
out
this
time
since
Central
Florida's
defense
is one
of the
stingiest
in the
country.
Defensive
ends
Darius
Nall
and
Bruce
Miller
are
causing
huge
problems
for
opposing
offenses.
Expect
this
to be
a low
scoring
game,
which
benefits
UCF.
If you
have
not
seen
the
Knights
play
yet,
this
defense
really
gets
after
people.

Auburn
36 Mississippi
28
Auburn
is currently
ranked
No.
1 in
the
BCS
Poll
and
they
also
possess
the
top
Heisman
candidate
in quarterback
Cam
Newton
according
to most
lists.
His
ability
to run
with
the
ball
has
opened
up a
number
of opportunities
for
other
ball
carriers
such
as Michael
Dyer
and
Onterio
McCalebb,
both
of whom
had
huge
days
last
week
versus
a stingy
LSU
defense.
Newton
has
generally
opted
to keep
the
ball
on zone
reads.
So defenses
have
tended
to cheat
and
focus
all
their
attention
on the
quarterback.
That's
when
Newton
is at
his
best,
giving
the
ball
up at
the
perfect
time
to set
up big
gains
for
his
duo
of young
and
talented
tailbacks.
Not
enough
credit
may
be given
out
to this
offensive
line.
Tackle
Lee
Ziemba
leads
a group
that
has
matured
into
one
of the
SEC's
best.
Ole
Miss
counters
with
a defense
that
is young
and
missing
a ton
of tackles.
That's
not
good
against
a guy
like
Newton.
For
Ole
Miss
to have
a shot
quarterback
Jeremiah
Masoli
has
to throw
against
a weakened
Auburn
pass
defense.
Ole
Miss
has
relied
chiefly
on a
rushing
game
to score
points
this
year,
which
isn't
to say
that
Masoli
has
been
a bust.
He still
seems
to be
figuring
out
his
niche
in the
offense
and
is capable
of big
plays.
The
Auburn
defense
had
its
best
performance
of the
year
last
week.
Much
of that
can
be attributed
to the
lows
of the
LSU
offense.
It was
still
a much-needed
confidence
boost.
There
is a
chance
for
an upset
in Oxford
as Auburn
has
been
living
close
to the
edge.
The
Rebel
Bears
are
not
that
bad
of a
football
team
like
their
record
shows
and
desperately
needs
a game
of this
magnitude
to get
back
on the
map.
The
Tigers
won't
lose
because
of Cam
Newton
and
the
inability
of the
Ole
Miss
defense
to tackle
someone.
Also
look
for
Newton
to secure
more
Heisman
votes
throwing
the
ball
against
one
of the
SEC's
worst
backfields.

Texas
34 Baylor
28
It is
unusual
for Baylor
to play
Texas
with the
Bears
ranked
and the
Longhorns
unranked.
The last
time that
happened
was in
1986,
when Baylor
was ranked
No. 17
in the
Associated
Press
poll.
Baylor
wound
up winning
that game,
18-13,
and went
on to
finish
the season
with a
9-3 record
and a
Bluebonnet
Bowl victory.
Athletic
quarterback
Robert
Griffin
has been
the solution
for the
Bears.
His is
12-10
in the
last 22
starts.
But he
gets plenty
of help
from tailback
Jay Finley
who is
closing
in on
a 1,000-yard
season.
This is
an electrifying
offense
that can
be difficult
to handle
and they
are fifth
in the
county
in both
total
offense
and passing
offense.
Texas
defensive
end Sam
Acho has
five sacks
and is
the heart
of his
team's
defense.
They also
possess
the nation's
No. 2
rated
pass defense
and that
will create
a definite
advantage
this week.
Texas
is a tough
team to
get a
handle
on with
their
inconsistency.
Quarterback
Garrett
Gilbert
is struggling
and the
running
game does
not have
an every
down back
that can
be counted
on. They
should
be able
to reverse
these
fortunes
as Baylor
has been
giving
up a good
many points.
That trend
cannot
continue
down the
stretch
as the
tougher
teams
in the
league
hit the
Baylor
schedule.
Former
quarterback
Colt McCoy
will be
on hand
to have
his jersey
retired.
The Texas
home crowd
won't
take this
game lightly
since
their
smaller
in-state
brother
from Waco
sits atop
the South
Division
standings.
Neither
will the
players.
This type
of rebound
game has
spelled
Longhorn
victory.

The
Utes
have
unleashed
quarterback
Jordan
Wynn
who
went
23 of
29 passing
last
week
for
321
yards
versus
Colorado
State.
They
also
can
impose
their
offensive
might
with
running
backs
Matt
Asiata
and
Eddie
Wide.
Much
like
TCU,
Utah
has
too
many
offensive
weapons
for
an Air
Force
defense
that
is giving
up 372
yards
per
game.
After
TCU
demolished
this
same
Falcon
team
last
week,
the
Utes
will
look
to keep
pace
in the
battle
of mid-major
undefeated
teams
that
have
to use
style
points
as a
way
to make
their
BCS
case.
An even
bigger
advantage
is that
Utah
is extremely
fast
on the
edge
and
they
have
two
cover
corners
that
can
lock
down
receivers
allowing
the
safeties
to come
up in
run
support.
That
is a
big
advantage
when
facing
a triple-option
type
of team
like
Air
Force
whose
head
coach
Troy
Calhoun
has
said
this
Utah
team
may
be the
best
the
school
has
ever
fielded.
Every
team
has
crushed
Air
Force
with
the
run
and
Utah
should
be no
exception.
FB Jared
Tew
is still
out
which
hampers
the
Falcon
offense
and
half
back
Asher
Clark,
who
had
a chance
for
1,000
yards
this
season
has
been
getting
completely
stuffed.
Look
for
Utah
to score
quickly
and
put
Air
Force
into
a passing
situation
they
can't
afford
to be
in.
Utah
could
be caught
looking
ahead
to the
TCU
game
next
week
but
it won't
happen
because
every
game
counts
for
teams
such
as Utah
who
are
scrambling
for
undefeated
poll
position.

Oregon
is 7-0
for
the
first
time
since
1933
and
leads
the
nation
in scoring
offense
at a
blistering
55.1
points
per
game.
This
is the
quickest
no-huddle
paced
offense
in the
history
of the
sport.
Their
ability
to embarrass
opponents
has
to do
with
running
back
LaMichael
James
running
of course.
But
what
has
made
the
biggest
difference
is quarterback
Darron
Thomas
and
his
ability
to pass
and
more
important
his
ability
to read
the
defense
with
those
spread-option
handoffs.
At times
even
the
cameraman
has
a difficult
time
following
which
player
has
the
ball.
USC
has
ample
talent
to run
with
the
Ducks.
But
their
problems
on defense
have
been
very
uncharacteristic
for
the
Trojans
as they
lack
tackling
skills
and
depth.
No depth
is a
formula
for
disaster
against
this
Quack
Attack
that
rarely
gives
defensive
players
a chance
to catch
their
breath.
USC's
combination
of an
average
pass
rush
and
an inexperienced
secondary
has
led
to problems
defending
the
pass.
USC
will
have
to put
points
on the
board
and
that
can
be accomplished
with
Matt
Barkley
behind
center.
The
Duck
defense
has
lived
off
turnovers.
Barkley
has
only
tossed
four
interceptions
and
the
skill
positions
for
USC
are
still
the
finest
collection
of high
school
athletes
that
include
a usual
stable
of ball
carriers
led
by Allen
Bradford
and
speedy
receivers
Ronald
Johnson
and
Robert
Woods.
It's
extremely
important
that
USC
be able
to control
some
of the
play
clock
else
risk
getting
blown
out
and
they
can
do that.
The
Ducks
have
shown
some
vulnerability
against
power
running
teams
and
that
could
be a
factor
with
the
inside
power
of Bradford.
Oregon
gets
tested
when
USC
has
the
ball,
but
USC
can't
handle
this
Oregon
offense
by a
long
shot.

Michigan

State

Two
teams
heading
in the
same
disappointing
direction
meet
in a
prime
time
Saturday
time
slot.
Both
teams
have
question
marks
and
are
attempting
to stomp
out
the
talk
of a
dooming
collapse.
Quarterback
Denard
Robinson
has
been
the
heart
and
soul
of the
Wolverines.
He claims
his
sore
shoulder
is 100
percent
healthy
after
coming
off
a bye
week
and
that
is a
bonus
for
the
team
that
leads
the
Big
Ten
in rushing.
Lost
in the
gaudy
rushing
numbers
for
Robinson
is the
way
he has
dramatically
improved
his
accuracy
throwing
the
football
while
the
offensive
line
has
allowed
only
three
sacks
this
year.
What
has
killed
the
Wolverine
fortunes
has
been
a beleaguered
defense
that
has
gone
through
massive
personnel
changes
and
multiple
tweaks
of its
schematic
approach.
Outside
of team
leading
tackler
Jonas
Mouton
at linebacker,
this
defense
has
been
vulnerable
to the
big
play
and
that
is putting
it mildly.
Penn
State
will
try
to use
a heavy
dose
of senior
running
back
Evan
Royster,
who
needs
just
31 yards
to move
past
Curt
Warner
and
become
the
school's
career
rushing
leader.
To beat
Michigan
though
means
throwing
the
football.
That
task
gets
harder
with
starting
quarterback
Rob
Bolden
still
listed
as questionable
by head
coach
Joe
Paterno
after
suffering
a concussion
last
week.
If he
cannot
go Matt
McGloin
and
Kevin
Newsome,
two
guys
that
were
projected
to start
last
summer,
get
a chance
to prove
they
are
a better
fit
behind
center.
A patchwork
defense
devastated
by injuries
has
held
together
for
the
most
part
in Happy
Valley.
Linebacker
Chris
Colasanti
is the
league's
top
tackler
but
the
defense,
as a
whole
has
not
fared
well
defending
the
rush.
That
makes
Michigan
the
favorite
after
having
lost
the
last
two
games
against
Penn
State
by an
average
of 27
points. |
