The
Illini
are
progressively
getting
better
each
week.
After
playing
top
ranked
Ohio
State
very
close,
they
followed
up by
crushing
Penn
State
in Happy
Valley
for
the
first
time
in school
history.
The
offense
is getting
it going
with
balance
that
includes
solid
play
out
of quarterback
Nathan
Scheelhaase
and
running
back
Mikel
Leshoure.
The
redshirt
freshman
signal
caller
enjoyed
the
best
game
of his
young
career
last
week
where
he hit
short
pass
after
short
pass
to keep
the
Nittany
Lions
from
focusing
solely
on Leshoure
and
the
ground
game.
The
defensive
front
seven
for
Michigan
State
has
been
performing
above
and
beyond
all
expectations.
After
passing
two
huge
exams
against
Wisconsin
and
Michigan,
the
depth
of the
front
four
and
the
terrific
play
from
senior
linebackers
Greg
Jones
and
Eric
Gordon
should
have
less
of a
problem
with
the
Illini
offense
despite
its
positive
gains
made
recently.
The
Spartans
have
some
balance
on offense
as well.
Quarterback
Kirk
Cousins
turned
in a
near-flawless
performance
against
the
Wolverines.
Denard
Robinson
came
in with
all
the
attention,
but
Cousins
owned
the
day.
Running
back
Edwin
Baker
continues
to give
this
offense
a weapon
that
can
go the
distance
on any
given
play.
The
linebacker
duo
of Martez
Wilson
and
Nate
Bussey
has
been
productive
for
Illinois
too.
The
one
area
Illinois
has
to win
for
them
to have
a chance
is getting
pressure
on Cousins.
The
Spartan
pass
blocking
skills
has
thus
far
been
their
weakest
point
and
the
Illini
are
second
best
in the
league
at getting
after
QBs.
Head
coach
Mark
Dantonio
finally
has
returned
to the
press
box
but
he won't
be allowed
on the
sidelines
just
yet.
The
Spartans
have
enough
of an
edge
in most
of the
unit
breakdowns.
The
home
field
pushes
them
over
the
top.
But
don't
expect
a ton
of scoring.
These
two
defenses
are
getting
better
each
Saturday.

One
aspect
remains
constant
for
the
Hawkeyes...they
continue
to be
stellar
on the
defensive
side.
They
rank
in the
top
five
nationally
in scoring
defense,
rushing
defense
and
total
defense.
They
have
yet
to allow
a rushing
touchdown
this
season
and
opponents
are
averaging
just
2.4
yards
per
carry.
When
teams
focus
on keeping
All-American
defensive
end
Adrian
Clayborn
in check,
players
like
defensive
tackles
Mike
Daniels
and
Karl
Klug
take
advantage.
Cornerback
Shaun
Prater
is one
of the
conferences
better
corners
and
team
leading
tackler
Jeff
Tarpinian
will
have
the
dubious
task
of squaring
up Michigan
quarterback
Denard
Robinson.
In the
loss
to Michigan
State,
the
Wolverines
posted
season-lows
in every
offensive
category.
Mr.
Robinson
and
company
will
meet
its
most
difficult
task
to date
matching
up with
this
defense.
They
are
spreading
the
ball
around
via
the
pass,
which
makes
it tough
to focus
on any
one
Michigan
player.
Tight
ends,
running
backs
and
wide
receivers
are
all
part
of the
passing
game.
The
overall
weakness
of the
Michigan
defense
was
exposed
the
previous
week
when
Indiana
passed
for
almost
500
yards
against
the
Wolverines.
The
vulnerability
was
magnified
against
Michigan
State,
as the
Spartans
rolled
up 536
yards
of offense.
Hawkeye
quarterback
Ricky
Stanzi
has
been
extremely
efficient
(only
two
interceptions)
but
he is
not
putting
up monster
numbers.
This
could
be the
week
he has
been
looking
for
while
running
back
Adam
Robinson
continues
to be
a one
man
show
out
of the
backfield.
Receiver
Derrell-Johnson
Koulianos
needs
just
66 yards
to pass
Tim
Dwight
as the
Hawkeyes
all-time
career
receiving
yardage
king.
He likely
gets
it.
Too
much
defense
this
week
from
the
Hawkeyes
and
too
much
lack
of for
Michigan
give
the
fans
in the
Big
House
another
reality
check
for
the
second
week
in a
row.

People
began
circling
this game
long before
Nebraska
announced
it was
leaving
for the
Big Ten.
This highlighted
game dates
back to
last year's
Big 12
Championship
Game where
Texas
won on
a controversial
last second
field
goal.
The Longhorns
are trying
to avoid
their
first
three-game
losing
streak
in over
a decade.
A defense
that was
befuddled
by UCLA's
Pistol
offense
and allowed
115 yards
rushing
to Oklahoma's
DeMarco
Murray
now must
face Nebraska's
Taylor
Martinez
and Roy
Helu.
Nebraska
rushed
for 451
yards
against
Kansas
State.
The redshirt
freshman
Martinez
set a
single-game
rushing
record
for a
Nebraska
quarterback
last week.
The Texas
defense
won't
be near
as bad
compared
to KSU
but it
still
has faults.
Look for
the Husker
offense
to continue
putting
up yards,
just not
as many.
What the
Huskers
do excel
at is
defending
the pass
and stuffing
the run.
The balance
on this
side of
the ball
is what
has put
this team
into a
lofty
Top 25
ranking.
While
the Texas
offensive
line that
lost three
multi-year
starters
has shown
signs
of progress,
they have
not seen
a defensive
front
like the
one they
will meet
in Lincoln.
This group
was owned
last year
in the
conference
title
game.
Huge defensive
tackle
Jared
Crick
is in
a position
to have
another
huge day.
The Longhorn
rushing
attack
still
needs
an identity
and struggling
young
quarterback
Garrett
Gilbert
has not
seen a
secondary
this good.
All signs
point
to a massive
revenge
game for
Nebraska.
But Texas
is coming
off a
bye week,
their
backs
are against
the wall
and their
manhood
is being
called
out. This
is by
far the
best athletic
team the
Huskers
have faced.
Closer
than some
might
think
but the
winner’s
circle
still
gets painted
red.

Auburn

The Razorbacks
have been
getting
it done
with the
arm of
quarterback
Ryan Mallett
and an
overachieving
defense
that hasn't
allowed
more than
24 points
in a game
yet this
season.
That doesn't
mean that
the Razorback
defense
is world
beating
by any
stretch,
but it's
a good
start
for a
unit that
was among
the worst
in the
SEC last
year.
While
Alabama
made its
comeback
against
this team
with the
power
game,
Auburn
counters
with the
wide-open
Cam Newtwon
show.
The JUCO
quarterback
might
be the
sole reason
why Auburn
reprints
a brand
new edition
of its
record
books
at the
end of
the season.
He is
now officially
in the
thick
of all
Heisman
discussions.
Quietly
getting
it done
each week
has been
receiver
Darvin
Adams.
He is
one of
the SEC's
best clutch
performers
in a conference
loaded
with talented
wide receivers.
This is
certainly
a battle
between
two potent
offenses.
Mallett
is off
the Heisman
wagon
for now
after
tossing
interceptions
at crucial
junctures
of the
Bama game.
His talented
receivers
continue
to keep
the offense
moving
but his
running
backs
won't.
This is
a very
one-dimensional
passing
team like
many Bobby
Petrino
offenses
of the
past.
What gives
the Razorbacks
a chance
is an
Auburn
secondary
that is
giving
up nearly
240 yards
a game
through
the air.
This one
has all
the makings
of a scoring
fest with
the last
passer
left standing.
Mallett
is a better
passer;
Newton
is a better
runner
and athlete.
This one
is sure
to go
down to
the wire
in one
of the
most exciting
offensive
SEC match
ups of
the year.
Auburn
might
be 3-0
in the
SEC and
locked
in a tie
for first
place
in the
SEC West,
but it's
doing
so by
the hair
of its
chinny
chin-chin.
It has
to end
at some
point,
but not
in Jordan
Hare Stadium.

Cal is
3-0 at
home and
0-2 on
the road
heading
into the
road game
against
USC. Cal
has not
won at
the Coliseum
since
2000.
The Golden
Bears
make a
successful
living
running
with the
ball and
stopping
others
from running
with it.
Tailback
Shane
Vereen
is having
a remarkable
campaign
as most
had predicted.
His efforts
have made
this offense
effective
despite
continual
shaky
play from
quarterback
Kevin
Riley.
The Tedford
coached
offense
is way
off it's
usual
pace and
accumulated
just 83
passing
yard last
week against
UCLA.
The Trojans
match
up very
well here.
To beat
USC means
throwing
the football
against
the Pac
Ten's
worst
pass defense
and Cal
doesn't
have it.
The Trojan
defense
has not
been able
to get
many stops,
especially
down the
stretch
of the
game.
This group
was not
deep to
begin
with and
is dealing
with nagging
injuries.
Offensively,
quarterback
Matt Barkley
has been
very good
this season,
although
he's not
getting
the usual
notice
a USC
quarterback
receives
because
the team
has fallen
from the
nation's
elite.
Running
backs
Allen
Bradford
and Marc
Tyler
help to
carry
the load.
The ground
game match
up with
this Cal
defense
should
be a good
one as
the Bears
have been
clogging
up opposing
ball carriers
at UCLA
and Arizona
handily.
The numbers
for USC
continue
to spiral
downward.
They have
lost two
games
in a row
for the
first
time since
2001 and
are just
2-5 in
the last
seven
conference
games.
The Trojan
home field
is no
longer
an advantage.
This one
is another
nail biter
however.
Believe
it or
not, Cal
looks
like they
have more
talent
across
the board
right
now. The
passing
attack
is in
shambles
else they
win by
14 points.
Trojans
hold on.

The Cowboys
new formed
spread
offense
has found
playmakers
again.
Receiver
Justin
Blackmon
is proving
that no
one can
cover
the sophomore.
He not
only gains
separation
on defenders,
but can
also make
difficult
catches
in traffic.
Running
back Kendall
Hunter
remains
one of
the top
rushing
threats
in the
Big 12.
The senior
continues
to put
up 100-yard
efforts
every
week.
Quarterback
Brandon
Weeden
has a
ways to
go but
is starting
to pick
up the
pace by
distributing
the ball
to multiple
receivers.
The youthful
defense
though
has to
find some
way to
avoid
all these
shootouts.
The secondary
has been
steady
led by
the instincts
of cornerback
Andrew
McGee
and his
three
interceptions
on the
year.
But this
group
is wearing
down by
games
end. These
two teams
are eerily
similar.
Coach
Tuberville
has said
he wanted
to stress
running
the ball
more at
Tech and
he has
finally
started
to accomplish
the task
with running
back Baron
Batch
and quarterback
Taylor
Potts.
The Red
Raiders
rushed
for 173
yards
against
Baylor
last week.
Make no
mistake;
the passing
game is
still
the bread
and butter
in Lubbock.
Taylor
Potts
was a
one-man
wrecking
crew against
Baylor
throwing
59 times
for a
personal
best 462
yards.
His array
of receivers
run deep
with Lyle
Leong,
Detron
Lewis
and Alex
Torres.
That inconsistent
Raider
defense
needs
to go
into the
body shop
for some
repair
work.
After
giving
up 441
yards
and 52
points
to Iowa
State,
Baylor
wrecked
Tech for
507 yards
and 38
points.
Expect
a ton
of points
Saturday.
If the
game is
close
as it
should
be, kicker
Dan Bailey
for OSU
is 11-for-11
on field
goal attempts
as he
zeros
in on
Barry
Sanders
all-time
scoring
record.
This could
be the
difference.

The Buckeyes
are now
the nation's
No. 1
ranked
team by
most accounts.
Why? For
starters
quarterback
Terrelle
Pryor
has answered
all critics
by throwing
the football
with accuracy.
Last week
against
Indiana,
while
nursing
a strained
thigh
muscle,
he did
not take
off running
once.
Instead,
he finished
24-of-30
passing
for 334
yards.
Running
back Brandon
Saine
has now
gotten
involved
in the
passing
attack
and Dane
Sanzenbacher
leads
all Big
Ten receivers
with seven
touchdown
receptions.
Separating
OSU from
the rest
is a defense
that is
shutting
down opponents
in all
facets.
Indiana
was held
to just
141 yards
passing
last week
but had
been averaging
348 yards.
The run
defense
is ranked
fourth
nationally.
What makes
this a
"grand
daddy"
game is
when Wisconsin
has the
ball,
as the
Badgers
possess
a ton
of playmakers
with the
“big
cheese”
up front
blocking.
The staple
is at
running
back where
both John
Clay and
James
White
continue
to grind
out 100-yard
games.
Quarterback
Scott
Tolzien
has been
very efficient
but he
is not
going
to beat
the Buckeyes
solely
with his
arm. It's
the mammoth
offensive
line that
makes
this offense
work and
it will
make for
a great
match
up to
watch
versus
this Buckeye
defensive
front.
What likely
puts the
Buckeyes
at an
advantage
is the
fact that
Wisconsin
has had
issues
defending
the pass.
Pryor
could
wind up
with another
performance
worthy
of being
placed
on his
Heisman
resume.
The fact
the game
is being
played
at Camp
Randall
gives
Wisconsin
a ray
of hope.
They both
share
the same
typical,
physical
Big Ten
style
of play.
It's just
that the
Buckeyes
have a
little
bit more
at the
skill
positions
across
the board,
including
quarterback.

The
expectations
have
changed
in Reno.
This
happens
when
you
get
ranked
for
the
first
time
in school
history.
The
Wolf
Pack
currently
sits
at No.
19 in
the
AP Poll.
If a
reason
had
to be
pinpointed
as to
what
has
gotten
Nevada
into
the
national
spotlight
it would
have
to be
on offense.
Senior
running
back
Vai
Taua
has
gone
over
100
yards
22 times
in his
career,
the
most
among
active
NCAA
players.
Four-year
starter
Colin
Kaepernick
can
still
run
and
throw
from
behind
center
as always.
All
this
equates
to the
No.
2 ranked
offense
in the
country.
The
defense
is not
so grand
however.
While
they
do have
a monster
defensive
end
in Dontay
Moch,
who
is the
all-time
WAC
leader
in tackles
for
loss,
the
numbers
do not
point
to a
Top
25 billing.
That
is not
good
news
this
week,
as they
will
have
to defend
against
the
nation's
No.
1 ranked
passing
offense
at their
home
on the
islands.
And
this
is a
very
dynamic
passing
attack.
Quarterback
Bryant
Moniz
continues
to make
receiver
Greg
Salas
the
centerpiece
of this
offense.
Something
new
has
been
developing
with
the
Warriors
too.
The
much-maligned
defense
is beginning
to step
up in
a big
way
as Fresno
State
found
out
last
week
while
only
posting
104
rushing
yards.
With
both
teams
undefeated
in conference
play
this
is a
game
that
will
determine
the
top
challenger
to Boise
State
in the
WAC
race.
It's
never
easy
to cross
out
into
the
Pacific
Ocean
and
tangle
with
Hawai'i
when
they
are
hitting
on all
cylinders.
This
one
has
upset
written
all
over
it in
a typical
high
scoring
Hula
fashion.
