To the best of my knowledge, these are all of the different helmet designs used by Appalachian State during the period covered by this web site (1960 to present).

The Citadel has a large and interesting helmet history with many other designs having been used since 1960 in addition to the ones shown above. I have partial information for a number of these:

c.1960: white helmets with numerals of an unknown color were used; these also had a stripe which was reported to be navy blue in color;

c.1964: apparently white helmets with a cartoon "bulldog head" logo which may have been similar or identical to the one used by Yale at approximately the same time;

c.1967: a different "bulldog head" was used; this one was mostly white and was worn on light blue helmet shells;

c.1971: a white bulldog logo was worn on light blue helmets;

c.1973: a "C" logo, possibly light blue with a dark blue outline, was worn on white helmets;

1978 - 1982: helmets were light blue with a five-pointed star logo on the sides; the star was gold in color with three "outlines": white/some dark color/white. There were also three stripes: white/some dark color/white. I have received conflicting information as to the color of the dark stripe and the dark outline around the star, with some people saying these parts were black, and others saying navy blue. The photographs that I have seen are not sufficiently clear to reveal which is correct;

1983 - 1986: helmets were light blue with a logo consisting of the words "The Dogs" in a script style; the letters were some unknown dark color (probably blue or black) with white outlines.

I would not be at all surprised to learn of additional short-lived helmet designs from the 1960s. Below are photographs of some of the designs which I have not yet been able to add to the web site, due to the various uncertainties listed previously.

The other historical helmets for Elon have been described as follows:

1967 - 1969: maroon helmets with maroon facemasks, one white stripe, and white numerals on the sides;

1970: gold helmet with white facemask and logo consisting of the word "ELON" in white letters inside a maroon oval shape; along the top and bottom of the oval are the words "CHARACTER" and "LEADERSHIP", respectively;

I would greatly appreciate clear photographs of any of the helmet designs used from 1967 through 1974.

FURMAN

I have received an interesting photograph from about 1963 showing Furman using dark-colored helmets (probably purple) with a logo consisting of what appears to be a light-colored "knight" chess piece on the sides. The helmet also features a light-colored stripe of some unknown color.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN

Georgia Southern's team first played in 1982 and has used only these two helmet designs during its existence.

Wofford used black helmets during at least the early 1980s, and used white helmets around 1970. Overall, I have not received much historical information yet for Wofford.
