Historical Helmets

AUGUSTANA

? - 2003 2004 - 2011 2012 -

BEMIDJI STATE

1998? - 1999 2000 2001
2002 -

Prior to the 1998 season, BSU used a logo consisting of the team name "Beavers" in a script font, colored green; this was worn on gray helmet shells.

CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

c.late 1980s - 1995 1996 - 1999 2000 - 2003
2004 2005 -

Concordia's team nickname was changed from "Comets" to "Golden Bears" for the 1999 season.

MARY

1988 - ? ? - 2011 2012 -

This team played its first season of football in 1988 and, according to information found at the team's web site, has used only the three helmet designs shown above. The year of transition from the first design to the second is unknown.

MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON

? - 2007 2008 - 2011 2012 -
*see note 1 below

*1 During the 2012 season the logo is being worn on the left side of the helmet only, with the right side being "blank".

MINNESOTA-DULUTH

c.late 1990s c.2000 -

MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO

1999 - 2000 2001 2002 - 2003
2004 (first six games) 2004 (last five games) 2005 - 2012
*see note 1 below
2013 -

From 1995 through 1998, MSU used an "MSU" logo, as shown in the photograph below; the letters were gold, and the helmet shell and facemasks were purple. A similar design was used from 1988 through 1994, but the facemasks were gold during those years.

*1 A new helmet logo was introduced and first used during the October 9, 2004 Homecoming game against South Dakota.

MINNESOTA STATE-MOORHEAD

? - 2007 2008 - 2012 2013 -

I have not received any information about earlier helmet designs used by this team.

MINOT STATE

? - 2001 2002 - 2006 2007 - 2011
2012 -

NORTHERN STATE

? - 2004 2005 2006 - 2008
2009 -

SAINT CLOUD STATE

? - 2005 2006 2007 -

SIOUX FALLS

2001 2002 ? - 2000; 2003
2004 - 2009 2010 - 2012 2013 -

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE

c.mid 1980s - 1994 1995 - 2003 2004
2005 - 2012 2013 -
*see note 1 below

*1 During the 2013 season the uniform numerals are being worn only on the left side of each helmet; on the right side is a "mustang head" logo, as depicted below.

UPPER IOWA

c.1990s - 2000? 2001? - 2002 2003 - 2005
2006 -

WAYNE STATE

c.1960s - 1970s;
c.early 1980s
1990 - 1998 2002 - 2004
1999 - 2001; 2005 -

During 1979 and 1980, Wayne State used light-colored helmets with a decal which spelled the word "WILDCATS", and from 1986 to 1989 a wildcat head decal was used. Another design, used during at least the 1984 season, featured a very unusual abstract wildcat head logo, visible in the photograph below:

Thanks to James K. for this picture.

WINONA STATE

c.1996 1997 - 2001 2002 - 2006
*see note 1 below
2007 -

During the 1980s and perhaps early 1990s, Winona State supposedly used the helmet design shown in the photograph below; the logo appears to be similar to but slightly different from the one used by Michigan State. I would appreciate a larger or clearer photograph of one of these helmets.

*1 Winona State apparently used plain helmets (without logos on the sides) during at least some of its games during the 2000 season, or perhaps the logos were worn on only one side of the helmet.
