On January 9, 2023 the Academy announced that it would restore the team at a "sub-varsity" level in 2023 and 2024, with a return to varsity play in 2025 at which time the team will be a member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

CUA was a major college team prior to World War II but the team was discontinued soon after the war. A club-level team began in the mid-1960s and an NCAA Division III team first played in 1977. The "known" missing helmet designs for this team since 1977 are as follows:
A "cardinal head" logo was adopted in 1988; I think it may have been entirely white and black without any red parts; this logo was apparently used through 1991. In 1992 the team used a logo that appears to be identical to the one used by the NFL's Cardinals, but again I think this may have been a white-and-black logo without any red color. The helmet shells for both these designs are presumably red.
In 1998 and 1999 two slightly different logos were apparently used, the earlier one having what appears to be a curved line beneath the school name. On both these designs I think the letters were probably white with red outlines.
*1 Plain black helmets were worn during the 2000 season in memory of team member Anthony Bottoni, who died in an automobile accident in December 1999.
*2 Uniform numbers are worn on the left side only of this design; a "C" logo is present on the right side (as depicted below).
*3 Uniform numbers are worn on the left side only of this design; a "C" logo is present on the right side (as depicted below).

The dates of use for these helmets are quite uncertain; I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can clarify the years of use for each design. The second and third shown above were used during at least parts of the 2003 and 2005 seasons, respectively.

*1 The Merchant Marine Academy began using an American flag logo on the left side of the team's football helmets in 1981 and has used it ever since (the logo was modified slightly in 2014), but a series of different logos have been worn on the right side during the same time period; below are representations of these. Since 2006 the flag logo has been worn on both sides during most games; in 2005, the right side was apparently "blank", judging from the small number of available photographs.
