Historical Helmets

BUENA VISTA UNIVERSITY

? - 1961 1962 - 1964 1965
1966 - 1972 1973 - ? c.mid 1980s
? - 2001 2002 - 2006 2007 - 2017
2019 2018; 2021 2022 -
*see note 1 below *see note 2 below
2023 -

This team had one of the more spectacular early helmet logos (photograph below from the college's 1963 yearbook): a large "beaver" silhouette which was presumably blue in color. The helmet shell color is unknown, but is presumably white or yellow, if the school colors have not changed since then. Interestingly, most of the team's facemasks appear to be a dark color during this same period (nearly every other team used default gray or white facemasks at this time).

*1 The "BV" logo is worn on the left side only of this design; white uniform numbers are worn on the right side.

*2 Uniform numbers are worn on the left side only of this design; a "BV" logo adorns the right side (as represented below).

CENTRAL COLLEGE

? - present

This is one of the very few teams that has used (to the best of my knowledge) only a single helmet design since this website began operation in 1999.

COE COLLEGE

? - 2001 2002 - 2023 -

UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE

? - 1996 1997 1998 - 1999
2001 - 2002 2003 - 2014 2015 -

Dubuque's 2000 season helmet design was similar to the 1998-1999 one shown above, but had a black outline around the letters and no central stripes.

An earlier helmet design (c.late 1970s/early 1980s) has been described as being similar to the 1997 helmet shown above, with the addition of a white "USC Trojan" logo.

LORAS COLLEGE

'A' (and 'A1', 'A2', & 'A3') 'B'
? - present 2015 -
*see note 1 below *see note 2 below

Since 2015 Loras has used the following sequences of helmet designs:

*1 Loras apparently used plain gold helmets throughout the period 1980 to 2014. Since 2015 a logo has been worn on the right side during most games, as represented below. Design 'A2' is 'blank' on both sides.

'A' 'A1' 'A3'

*2 This design is "blank" on its left side only; the right side has an "L" logo (as shown below).

LUTHER COLLEGE

'D'
? - 2000 2001 2002 - 2003
'E' 'B' 'C'
2004 - 2013 2013 2013
2014 - 2015 2016 November 4, 2017
November 11, 2017 2017 - 2021 2022
*see note 1 below
2023 -

In 2013 Luther used four of the above helmet designs in the following sequence: D-D-D; B-B-C; C-E-E; E.

*1 The left side of this design is 'blank'; uniform numbers are worn on the right side (as represented below).

NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

1960 - 1963 1964 - 1966 1967 - 1968
1968 1969 1970 - 1974
1976 1977 1975; 1978 - 1981
1982 - 1986 1988 - 1990 1991 - 1993
1994 - 1995 1996 1997 - 2000
2000 2001 - 2017 2018 -
*see note 1 below

*1 Nebraska Wesleyan switched to this design when the college changed the names of its athletic teams from "Plainsmen" to "Prairie Wolves"; this occurred about (I think) midway through the 2000 season. It was incorrectly reported to me earlier that the helmet design was changed at halftime of the team's homecoming game that year; while the new nickname and logo were introduced at halftime, the new helmet design was not used until the following week.

SIMPSON COLLEGE

1987 - 1993 1994 - 1997 1998 - 2001
2002 - 2007 2008 - 2021 2022 -

WARTBURG COLLEGE

? - present

The current helmet design has apparently been in use since at least 2000, making this one of the very few teams that have existed since this website was started and have used only one design during this period (to the best of my knowledge).
