Quarterback / Defensive Front

Brett Hundley has shown in just his first year that he is more than capable of guiding this spread offense now and in the future. Led by All-American Anthony Barr, this defensive front seven has the potential to keep UCLA in the Pac 12 title chase again.

Secondary / Pass Protection

The numbers aren't good here for the nation's 91st ranked pass defense. Safety Tevin McDonald is a legit talent but the other three full-time starters need replaced. This offensive line is giving up way too many sacks. This was a very young group in 2012. With a little more experience this group can do better.

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2013 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK TAKES

    12/18/12

  • Brett Hundley is one of the better young dual-threat quarterbacks in college football. His accomplishments get dwarfed by the Mariota's and Manziel's of the world. His passing game exceeds his running ability and the UCLA future looks bright with him under center for three more years.
  • It's a good thing Hundley can use his feet as the Bruins ranked 118th nationally in sacks allowed. This issue needs to be addressed quickly with the many starters returning to this offensive line.
  • The loss of Johnathan Franklin and his 1,700 rushing yards will be sorely missed. But the spread offense bought in by coordinator Noel Mazzone, who scrapped the Pistol offense favored the past couple of years, has worked immediate wonders. Can it work wonders with a former highly recruited talent like Jordon James or possibly someone else waiting in the wings? This will be a huge key.
  • On the plus side the UCLA 3-4 front looks ready to contend for another Pac 12 Championship Game. Former running back/receiver Anthony Barr is now the best linebacker in the Pac 12.
  • Coach Jim Mora has given UCLA a no-nonsense swagger where winning games is to be expected. A feeling exists that this could be the first time in a very long time that the UCLA football program can compete on a national level consistently. The notion extends beyond the Golden State borders.
