Defense

Suffice to say, TCU is stacked on the defensive side for the upcoming season. Only one starter departs and the entire group can lay the wood. They have the talents to bring pressure on quarterbacks, stuff the run and cover like a blanket.

Quarterback / Running Back

The quarterback situation isn't really a concern as much as it is a question as to whether Casey Paschall returns from a season long suspension. The sophomore Boykin can run and has a strong arm but the veteran Paschall is more accurate. The handoffs get distributed fairly evenly among the running backs mostly due to injury issues. Will this be another committee approach or will one of them step up and take sole control of the ground game?

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2013 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK TAKES

    12/18/12

  • Quarterback Trevone Boykin has competed about as well as anyone could have asked the redshirt freshman after getting thrown into the fire due to the quick suspension of original starter Casey Pachall back in early October. Boykin is durable, tough, has a big arm and can throw the deep ball but his accuracy just isn't there yet.
  • Pachall has filed for reinstatement to TCU. Whether or not he will be allowed back on the football team is not known at this time. If he does come back and meets all his requirements most could see him being the starter again once August 2013 rolls around. But don't count out Boykin as the front-runner if the two wind up dueling it out.
  • Injuries have not been kind to the running backs. Can 2011 leading rusher Waymon James come back from a season ending knee injury? If not B.J. Catalon was the state of Texas' No. 1 rated all-purpose back out of high school.
  • TCU employs a 4-2-5 defensive scheme that gets after people. The defensive line is an aggressive physical group and the secondary led by All-American cornerback Jason Verrett will have some very high expectations placed on them.
  • With only one starter gone on the defensive side, head coach Gary Patterson is preparing to make this team a dominant force in just his second year as a Big 12 member. Everyone wants to know if TCU is capable of competing week-in and week-out in a BCS-aligned league. The answer will come next season as these Frogs are filled to the horns with experience and talent. Oh yea, and the head coach is still pretty good too.
