2010 OUTLOOK
Southern Cal’s propensity for losing to teams with far lesser players (in terms of recruits’ star rankings) has now driven the Trojans completely out of the nation’s Top 20 and into a bowl game played before January for the first time since 2001 (Pete Carroll’s first season here). So it should be no surprise to finally see that at start the upcoming season, they will be void of their expected Top 10 status. Nothing gets handed to new head coach Lane Kiffin in terms of national recognition. Although he will inherit the same cupboard stocked with the best prep talent America has to offer. If Kiffin has an ounce of coaching ability, which the world has yet to see based on his previous short head coaching stints, USC is in a prime position to remain a national powerhouse, or at the least not far off. Understandably, when true freshman Matt Barkley was given the reigns behind center last year, questions immediately arose about just how good this team could be under his untested leadership and skills and those concerns had some deal of truth as the record showed. Barkley is bound to be a great QB though and everybody knows it. USC has veteran tailbacks Allen Bradford (team-high 596 rushing yards last season) and C.J. Gable, as well as all-around fullback Stanley Havili. With receiver Damian Williams jumping early to the NFL, the Trojans are currently without an All-Conference type of route runner. Leaders David Ausberry and Ronald Johnson are at least both seniors. There is plenty of work to do this off-season, which includes completely rebuilding a secondary that is short on starting experience. Starting DT Christian Tupou was also lost for the year with an injured knee suffered in the spring. Sure, there certainly is plenty of talent across the board here. USC can again rise and win the Pac Ten, and they can still compete for a national championship if things ‘click’. They also could wind up being the same team that continues their recent struggling trends...getting beat by unranked and far inferior teams. Until they show the world something different, the Trojans are actually lucky to jump into a Top 15 position this preseason.
