SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS
OFFENSE - 9
------RETURNING STARTERS------
DEFENSE - 7
KEY LOSSES
OFFENSE: Amarri Jackson-WR, Jared Carnes-OT, Walt Walker-OT
DEFENSE: Woody George-DE, Richard Clebert-NT, Allen Cray-DT, Ben Moffitt-MLB, Trae Williams-CB, Mike Jenkins-CB
Quarterback / Receiver

Matt Grothe was the Bull's leading rusher for the second straight season. If he starts to develop an even more effective passing game, look out. In the tradition of great Sunshine State football programs, USF’s skilled receivers go five-to-six deep.

Cornerback

Gone are two of the school’s/country's best shutdown cornerbacks. They were a big part of the Bull's defensive success. The development of the incumbents will be crucial.

QB Matt Grothe

DE George Selvie

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2008 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK ANALYSIS

When NationalChamps.net first told the college football world a year ago (with the release of the 2007 Early Bird Preview) that South Florida would be a top 25 team, many took note, but many also scoffed at the notion. After some big wins against major programs, we are again claiming that South Florida should start the season ranked. Head coach Jim Leavitt has a well-earned reputation for being competitive, and he has the talent now to stay with anyone. There will be some question marks heading into next season on defense. Two of the country's best cornerbacks will move on to play on Sundays, and sure-tackler Ben Moffitt is gone at MLB. Iowa State-transfer Tyrone McKenzie (All-Big East Second Team) is looking to fill the void and returning DE Georgia Selvie’s statistics were off the charts in ‘07...good enough to put him on most every First Team All-American post-season list. His 31.5 TFLs were the best in the country and his sack total (14.5) ranked second nationally, so his presence (and subsequent health) is important. While there are questions on defense at several positions, enough talent remains for team success in stopping foes. This is a defense built on quickness, one that will have a good enough blend of veterans and youngsters to help continue the recent success. The best attributes, though, still reign on the offensive side with nine starters back. The receivers go five (even six) deep, and the bruising RBs offer several faces with quality playing time from which to choose. Still, QB Matt Grothe continues to be the team's leading rusher and the centerpiece for any top25 status they may garner…so can he hold up taking the weekly poundings he does? If his throwing arm can find more consistency, this offense has the makings to actually win the Big East title. Foes should be cautious not to underrate the Bulls…after beating Auburn on the road this past year and powerful West Virginia the past two tries, the Bulls now carry expectations and no longer get the label of Dark Horse. Not No.2 for very long once they reached that high in 2007 (went 0-3 and dropped out of the top 25 immediately after earning that ranking), we’ll have to see how they handle the heavy preseason hype this time. We think much was learned from that meteoric rise – and subsequent collapse – in the rankings, and that this team is learning how to put together a truly special season that will soon be seen. Anyone on the new schedule that squares off with USF will have to bring their "A" game if they wish to pull out a victory.
