If everyone returns up front, OU will possess the nation's No. 1 rated OL unit and all will be seniors. Sam Bradford finished the regular season with the nation's No. 1 rated pass efficiency as just a freshman.

Secondary

The secondary underachieved to some extent in ’07 but still maintains a full stable of top-rated players and is a rather deep group. They will need to be, especially if Smith and Harris decide to split.

QB Sam Bradford

LB Curtis Lofton

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2008 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK ANALYSIS

If there is a better OL coming back in ’08, we have yet to see it. Every starter is back from a unit that finished the regular season fourth nationally in sacks allowed. This is an all-senior lineup, full of NFL potential. Obviously, a few of them could declare early for the NFL after the Fiesta Bowl. QB Sam Bradford will now enter just his second season as the starter, finally giving OU some stability at the most crucial position...something that has not been true for five seasons. In fact, coach Bob Stoops has now won his fifth Big 12 title since 2000 with his fifth different QB. The future with Sam under center looks so promising and that future is now. The redshirt frosh finished '07 as the nation's top rated passer (efficiency). The receiving corps is also a lineup composed of top quality seniors. Since Adrian Peterson, no one ball carrier has stepped up to remotely match his production and skill level, though, the team’s RB-by-committee ranked 30th and was worth nearly 200 yards per game with this stellar line. All eyes will be on young DeMarco Murray - last spring many felt he was to be the next special RB in Sooner Country. He has not yet met those expectations, but expect him to be the main weapon out of the backfield for '08 and beyond. Defensively, no one player may have been more important to his team than LB Curtis Lofton for OU, the Big 12 Defensive Player of The Year. If he decides to return for his senior campaign, the front seven has the potential to be dominating. The secondary has been deep as of late, so how did this unit underachieve in 2007 (68th-rated pass defense)? Guys such as Smith, Holmes and Harris still make this group a force in terms of sheer individual skill/talent, so playing together will eventually come. With OU finishing the regular season on such a positive note (Big 12 title), they headlined many BCS National Championship arguments in terms of who was the most deserving two-loss team…outside of LSU. This factor, combined with so many seniors returning and a top rated QB, makes the Sooners a sure bet to be in the same national title conversations come August and into December.
