Running Back / Linebacker

RB Ian Johnson will toss his name back into the Heisman mix this preseason. This all-senior group of LBs has depth behind them as well. Running on this unit will prove difficult.

Quarterback / Offensive Line

Who is next in the great line of heralded Boise State QBs? Coaches may not know until late summer. OT Ryan Clady made a few All-American teams this past fall, but if he should decide to go pro, the OL will be totally revamped.

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2008 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK ANALYSIS

The WAC is becoming notorious for crashing the BCS bowl party. Even when this isn’t the case, somebody from this conference – namely Boise – usually deserves to be ranked. State is going to need a new QB to replace All-WAC honoree Taylor Tharp. The newcomers’ task will also require his/their job be done behind a fresh-faced OL. The good news is that RB Ian Johnson is back for his senior season. His Heisman campaign got derailed early when he was forced to play hurt. But, hey, this is Boise State. They will always find a way to score points - one way or another - with so many quality receivers in the mix. However, they may not have to do a bunch of scoring with eight starters back on a defense that finished ranked 21st for total effort. Anyone that believes this team is not capable of running the table despite having to locate a new QB would be naive. Whether the coach was/is Dan Hawkins or Chris Petersen, the Broncos have built a winning tradition that has successfully/successively been passed down from the seniors to the freshmen. OK, so an undefeated season is not so likely on paper with Oregon to start. But we've heard that before. Even if this team cannot run the table (which is required by a mid-major in order to earn a BCS bowl bid), they will be the favorite to win the WAC. The top league competitors, Hawai'i and Fresno State, will both visit the infamous "Smurf Turf". As the world has found out, a WAC champion is often good enough to be more than just a ranked football team, and the 2008 Broncos could easily make it three-in-a-row…that the wearers of the conference crown go BCS bowling.
