QUICK ANALYSIS

Rounding out the Top 11 is yet another SEC member. The logjam at the bottom of this grouping is sure to make the conference one of the nations most competitive, as usual. Florida has been a stranger to this discussion the last three seasons. Now, thanks to Ron Zook's recruiting efforts, the Gators finally have a cavalcade of youngsters capable of getting them back to their usual - a higher competitive level instead of wishing for another BCS possibility. Urban Meyer will be handed the keys to a Ferrari. All eyes will be on junior QB Chris Leak in an effort to see if the talk of what "could be" during his freshman season can actually become "what is". Which brings us to the defense. Basically, Florida needs a better effort all-around on 'D' to get where the Gators desire. We knew the pass defense was likely to be suspect in 2004 with a completely new set of starters, and holes will still exist in the secondary. If the new ball coach (as opposed to the ol' ball coach) comes into Gainesville smiling, thank Ron Zook for doing the shopping. For now, the Gators will have to earn any higher rankings, which is likely if the defense can pull its weight. But beware of prognosticators who hand over a top five ranking again before the first snap.
