* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic
gauge for listing players that departed and players that
received the most playing experience (consistent starters).
NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing
personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers,
injuries, incoming recruits, back ups, and alternates.
Their coverage will begin with our full 2004 Preseason
Preview due out this coming spring. |

QUICK
ANALYSIS
|
Here
we go again
another incredible prospectus
as we look into Virginia Tech's future. But this
team has had an Achilles' heel each of its past
promising seasons - it's called November. How
many times do we see undefeated records and high
rankings go south as soon as the eleventh month
hits in Blacksburg? Beating Miami at the beginning
of turkey-month knocked quite a chip of over-achieving
head coach Frank Beamer's shoulder, but this late-season
tanking has to stop sometime. Look for the Hokie's
QB tandem (senior Randall, sophomore Vick) to
provide the leadership needed to get them over
this scheduled hump. RB Kevin Jones' has declared
for the NFL, which creates a huge void in the
running game. WR/DE/PR DeAngelo Hall is another
candidate with early NFL potention. His return
will be essential for that upper echelon to be
reached. The defensive line allowed 3.5 per rush
and the entire defense allowed 343 yards per tilt,
both numbers that have to improve. But we all
know where "Beamer Ball" works best,
and that is on special teams. 2003 saw the Hokies
with the nation's eighth-ranked punt returner
and third-ranked kick returner, let alone their
four blocked kicks. Factor in how VT nets almost
four more yards per punt and the 12-for-15 (80%)
field goal tally, and you see why the Hokies surge
where so many others sputter. The expectations
will again be high as they competition level changes
to ACC teams. Things should remain constant, though,
and Tech will join Miami to keep their new conference
from again being a Seminole's gimme.
