QUICK ANALYSIS

The Wolverines may lose some offensive firepower, but come on, when has Michigan NOT reloaded well? Lloyd Carr is one of the best coaches at replacing talent. The Maize 'n Blue brings back 13 starters but will need to locate a new TB to replace Heisman Invite Chris Perry as well as a portion of their offensive line. Most notably, though, they will be replacing their QB, something Michigan fans will be eager to see… or will they? The word out of Ann Arbor is that new QB Matt Gutierrez will be another gem in the long line of Michigan QB studs. The receivers, without a doubt, will be the best of the Big Ten. Fans will have to wait to see if Braylon Edwards returns for his senior campaign to join Steve Breaston for another year of pass-catching highlight film creation. Loads of inexperienced talent hopefully awaits on the defensive side of the ball, ready to emerge as only three of the starting front-seven return. Big Ten teams have to be able to stop the run if they desire to compete in the grindstone conference schedule. This will be the Wolverines biggest concern in the off-season...the DL. The secondary has improved each of the last two seasons. There is reason to believe 2004 will be another step in that direction as three well-tested upperclassmen dot the secondary depth chart led by 2002 All-American Marlin Jackson. The big question is…can they overcome the untied shoelaces they've seemingly tripped over in years past to both start and finish strong? And can the 113th-ranked punt squad improve so as not to lose games? Contests at Purdue and OSU will again be the season's measuring stick come November.
